The Pimlico Special Returns in 2008
As racing states come under threat of neighboring states using slot machines to increase their income and purses, special stakes races, such as the Pimlico Special, fall onto the chopping block. Last year, the Maryland thoroughbred racing commission cancelled the running of the 2007 Pimlico Special to keep the other big live horse racing events stable. However, because of the history of the race, reshuffling of races has been done to ensure the return of the Pimlico Special to the Preakness program.

Queen Anne founded the Ascot Racecourse in 1711. Since that time it has become a symbol of style and status across the world. Located a mere six miles away from Windsor Castle, the Ascot has remained synonymous with the royal family. The Her Majesty’s Plate was the first thoroughbred race to take place here. From 1945, more racing events were added to the calendar, and from 1965, hurdles and steeplechase races were being run at Ascot Racecourse. But it is the Royal Ascot racing meet that is still seen as one of the premier events in England.
