Changes in the Fairmount Park Season

In the last few years, many racetracks have felt the pinch in regard to states and tracks that have combined casinos with racing and been able to increase their purses. The reduction in contenders affects smaller racetracks tremendously, as trainers move their horses to the horse racing events with the bigger purses. For Fairmount Park it has not been any different. With its neighboring states offering big purses, it has had to reduce its number of racing dates to keep its head above water, but things are looking up for Fairmount Park.

“The First Saturday in May”

Even seasoned punters are sometimes unaware of what happens behind the scenes of horse racing. They merely look at the names on the racing card, follow their favorite horse’s performance from race to race and hope that their predictions will deliver a winner. And one of the most popular and legendary races is the Kentucky Derby. But there is a lot of care, training, celebration and disappointment that spectators don’t know about. Yesterday, April 10th, was the opening day for the spring season of horse racing action at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie. With a little bit luck, they will be spared the downpour of rain for the 2008 season. The new improvements to the track and a jam-packed racing schedule, mean Lone Star Park is ready for show stopping live horse racing.

Jockey Dreams Come True

The Palmowski family did not have anything to do with horses or racing. They did not own a horse, and only watched horse racing events in passing on the television screen. It is therefore understandable that they were visibly shocked when their fourteen year old son, Joseph Palmowski, announced that he wanted to become a jockey. His dream of riding some of the greatest horses in the horse racing industry started after he watched the Grand National, and his determination gave him the courage to take on the challenge that would shape his future.
