Our Vic Shines at Aintree
The Aintree Grand National has kicked off in high gear, with many nail-biting races and thrilling finishes. As the contenders for the Totesport Bowl Chase started getting ready, anticipation amongst the enthusiastic spectators started heating up, and all eyes were on the race favorite, Kauto Star. But it was not meant to be for the massive horse, who lost the racing event to Our Vic by little more than a nose.

Black Jack Ketchum Bids Farewell to Racing
As the Aintree Grand National kicks off there will be one contender missing from the cards, Black Jack Ketchum. Unlike his outlaw cowboy namesake, Thomas “Black Jack” Ketchum, he does not meet his untimely demise by way of execution but through retirement from a career as a hurdler. The decision to retire this magnificent horse was made this week, as both trainer and owners feel that Black Jack Ketchum has tried to tell them that his heart is not in racing anymore.

Top Harness Racing during the Classic Series
The Classic Series is a harness racing series that takes place in four stages. There are three preliminary legs to the series, and to be eligible for the finals in the Classic Series participating horses must race in at least two of the preliminary rounds. The four main races consist of the Classic Distaff, Classic Oaks, Pacing Classic and the Trotting Classic. On Monday, the 7th of April, the first round of the fifteen race program will kick off the Classic Series, with the second leg being hosted by the Mohawk Racetrack on 31 May 2008, whilst the third leg will be held at Meadowlands on the 19th of July 2008, and the $250 000 finals of the Classic Series will take place at Meadowlands on the 26th of July 2008.

New York Sire Stakes Program
To be able to support the breeding program in the state of New York, the Harness Horse Breeders of New York State inaugurated the New York Sire Stakes program in 1961. Being the first program of its kind in North America, other states followed the example of the New York Sire Stakes, encouraging local breeding of quality horses. The program led to the establishment of the Agriculture and New York State Horse Breeding Development Fund in 1965, which is responsible for the research done within the state of New York in regard to equine programs and breeding facilities of Standard Bred horses.

Authorities Take a Serious Look at Whips
Tension and heated debates have started up again in the horse racing industry, in regard to the use of whips. Some see whips as an essential racing tool if used correctly, while others view the use of whips as a form of cruelty. The controversy surrounding the use of whips has flared up dramatically following the suspension of no less than nine jockeys during the Cheltenham festival, the looming Eddie Ahern case and the spotlight that will now fall on the Aintree Grand National that starts this week.

New Rules Underway for Endurance Racing
Endurance racing has become a rapidly growing sport, as it appeals to riders of all ages and many families compete together as a way of bonding and enjoying an activity together. Horses of all ages are also able to compete, and most riders don’t necessarily enter for winning, but to have fun with their trusted steeds.
