Canadian Hall of Fame Nominees

On the 20th of May, the names of the inductees to the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame will be announced. Until then, the twenty-two nominees will have to wait patiently to find out if their names will be read at the induction ceremony, taking place in August. A twenty person committee has been announced to vote, and to be inducted, a nominee must receive a seventy-five percent vote. Of the twenty-two nominees, there are few names that stand out above the rest, and that many are hoping will be inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.

Record Sale of Auckland Reactor

Everyone in the harness racing community of New Zealand would agree that Auckland Reactor is probably the best three year old pacer that the country has seen in while. Sired by the legendary Mach Three, breeders and owners, Tony and Anne Parker have just signed a deal with a North American group, to sell Auckland Reactor for an unbelievable $4 million. It is said that this is the highest selling price to date, in the harness racing industry.

Melbourne Cup Prize Money now $5.5 Million

This year, the Melbourne Cup will have much more at stake than in 2007, a staggering $500 000 more. As one of Australia’s most respected and richest races, being second in the world to the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in France, it is the first increase since 2005, when the prize money was raised from $4.5 million, to $5 million. The increase has raised the stakes for all top ten positions in the Melbourne Cup, with the winner walking away with $3.3 million.

Fractures – Types, Causes and Prevention

Racing and even training puts a vast amount of strain on the bones in the legs of horses. To understand the pressure that a leg is under during a full gallop, it is vital to point out that even though horses are much larger than human athletes, their bone structures are approximately the same size. When a thoroughbred is at full gallop, only one leg is in contact with the ground at a time. This causes the force of an estimated seven tons to be exerted on each leg as the horse moves through the stride. It is this force that can cause serious damage if a horse steps wrongly or is running on uneven ground.

Victory for Nataroga at 1000 Guineas

Five years ago, Pascal Bary had pinned his hopes on Six Perfections to bring home a victory for him in the 1000 Guineas in 2003. But a small pilot error led to Russian Rhythm gliding to victory and Six Perfections fighting for second place. She went on to win the Breeder’s Cup and the Prix Jacques le Marois, leaving behind all the memories of the 1000 Guineas, but Pascal Bary still craved the win.
