Record Budget for Australian Harness Racing

The duties of the Racing and Wagering Western Australia, or RWWA, includes regulating and supervising all racing aspects of harness racing, thoroughbred racing and greyhound racing that take place in Western Australia. This entails overseeing rules, drug testing, promoting welfare and development, loans, clubs, jockeys and acting as liaison between government authorities and the racing community. Racing budgets are also a major part of their responsibilities, and they have just announced a record budget for the harness racing 2008/2009 financial year, of $30.6 million.

Kentucky Derby Spectacular

After months of speculation and predictions, the big day finally arrived and over a hundred and fifty-seven thousand members of the public walked through the gates at Churchill Downs to watch the hundred and thirty-fourth running of the Kentucky Derby. South Africa Heading to the Tatts Cox Plate

The Tatts Cox Plate is one of Australia’s most prestigious racing events. It is run over a distance of 2040 meters and is a Group 1 race that has a purse of $3 million. Moonee Valley Racecourse is host to the event, which will take place on 28 October 2008, and already speculation over contenders has begun. Violencello won the first W.S. Cox Plate in 1922, which was named in honor of William Samuel Cox, the founder of the Monee Valley Racecourse.

Do Heart Murmurs Affect Performance?

To understand the workings of a heart murmur, it is important to know how the heart operates in horses. The average sized horse has a heart that is the size of a basketball and it is the centre of the cardiovascular system. There is approximately forty-five liters of blood in the body of a horse that needs to be pumped by the heart. The heart pumps at an estimated rate of forty beats a minute and the valves that allow the blood to flood in and out of the heart causes the “lub-dub” sound that is heard through a stethoscope.
