2010 Pacific Classic

One of the most anticipated racing events on the Del Mar Racecourse's racing calendar is the Pacific Classic Stakes. It is an annual event that is open to horses three years old and older, and is run over a distance of ten furlongs. With a purse of $1million, the Pacific Classic Stakes lures the best athletes from across America to participate, and this year was no different. Richards' Kid was able to successfully defend his title, and become the 2010 Pacific Classic Stakes winner.

Personal Ensign Stakes for Rachel Alexandra

Previously won by horses such as War Hero, Birdstone, Street Sense and Summer Bird, the Travers Stakes is one of the most memorable events on the horse racing calendar. Named in honor of William R. Travers, the race was inaugurated in 1864, and has developed into a spectacular Grade I flat horse racing event for three-year-old fillies, colts and geldings. It is the highlight event for the Saratoga Racecourse horse racing season, and it was recently announced that Rachel Alexandra will be in the paddocks on the same weekend as this wonderful event.

On the Road to the Eclipse

On Saturday, 21 August 2010, the Alabama Stakes got underway at the Saratoga Racecourse. With $500 000 as prize money, the best athletes descended on the racecourse to participate in this anticipated event. It is a Grade I flat horse racing fixture that was inaugurated in 1872, and has seen many magnificent horses enter and win this event, including Classy Cathy, Summer Quest, Pine Island, Open Mind and Careless Jewel. On Saturday, however, the victory went to Blind Luck, putting her into the running for the Eclipse Award.

Mel Lawson Honored

Since its inauguration in 1976, the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame has paid tribute to horse trainers, horse racing industry builders, standardbred horses, thoroughbred horses, jockeys and sulky drivers every year. It has made its home at the Woodbine Racetrack. This year, inductees to the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame will be honored at a ceremony at the Mississauga Convention Center, with the master of ceremonies being Jim Bannon. And the time has also come for Mel Lawson to be inducted as a builder into the hall of fame.

Victory for Wasted Tears

Del Mar Racecourse was buzzing with excitement as the running of the John C. Mabee Stakes got under way. An extremely talented field of competitors entered the starting gates of this magnificent Grade II event, with their eyes on the prize of $250 000. Fortunately for everyone involved in the racing career of Wasted Tears, she had the tenacity to continue fighting for her victory amidst the high pressure of contenders chasing her down, completing the race with a nail-biting finish.

Harbinger Retired

Harbinger began to rock the horse racing industry last year with magnificent performances, showing improvement and skill with each event. His talent and ability won the hearts of fans and catapulted him to iconic status. He was also seen as the best flat thoroughbred racing athlete in the world. Unfortunately all hopes and dreams to see him participate in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in October were dashed by a fractured leg that has led to his retirement.
