2011 Thistledown Season

The Ohio Derby will be held on 4 June 2011. This will be the 77th time that the race will be held. It has a colorful history, with the race being in inaugurated in 1876 but cancelled in 1882. It was brought back in 1924, and was won by the legendary Black Gold. It is now held at the Thistledown Racecourse, in Ohio, and is a Grade III race for horses that are three-years-old. Hosted on a dirt track, the race covers a distance of one and 1/16 miles, and has a purse amount of $100 000. Although the race is some time away, trainers are already preparing for this event and the excitement is mounting around the new Thistledown Season.

Weight in the Spotlight for Aintree Grand National

It is almost that time of year again, when the Aintree Grand National gets underway in April, and it is known to be one of the most difficult and strenuous steeplechase events in the world. The race is run over a distance of four and a half miles, and there are thirty fences for competitors to negotiate throughout this grueling race. Less than half the contenders even complete the race. With the weight ratios for the race recently being released, there is more discussion in regard to the weight that horses have to carry during this event.

2010 St Leger Festival

The Ladbrokes St Leger Festival is an event that horse racing enthusiasts in Britain look forward to the most, as it is filled with festivity, fashion and unbeatable live horse racing action. Personal Ensign Stakes for Rachel Alexandra

Previously won by horses such as War Hero, Birdstone, Street Sense and Summer Bird, the Travers Stakes is one of the most memorable events on the horse racing calendar. Named in honor of William R. Travers, the race was inaugurated in 1864, and has developed into a spectacular Grade I flat horse racing event for three-year-old fillies, colts and geldings. It is the highlight event for the Saratoga Racecourse horse racing season, and it was recently announced that Rachel Alexandra will be in the paddocks on the same weekend as this wonderful event.

2010 Whitney Handicap Invitational

On Saturday, 7 August 2010, six talented horses will enter the starting gates of the Whitney Handicap Invitational, which is set to be a showdown to remember. With posts drawn and contenders gearing up for a spectacular performance, the stage is set for one of the most prestigious Grade 1 horse racing events of the season. The race will be hosted by the Saratoga Racecourse and there will be eleven races on the card, with the Whitney Handicap Invitational being the tenth race for the day.

Nicanor Gets Ready for Action

Walking out onto the track for training, his curiosity gets the better of him. He looks at his surroundings, and his intelligence absorbs every moment out on the field. His rider waits patiently for him to indicate that he is ready to work. If one had never seen him and only heard his character described, you would think it was Barbaro out on the track. But it is his full brother, Nicanor, and he is a horse that everyone has very high expectations for. Trainer Michael Matz is aware of the huge shoes that are expected to be filled, but remains reserved in regard to his views of Nicanor.
