Doomben: Racing to the Future - Horse Racing

The Brisbane Amateur Turf Club is one of the leading horse racing clubs in the southern hemisphere. It was created in 1923 on a swampy marsh, which had a creek running through, earning it the nickname, The Creek. In the early days its main attraction was the historic Albion Park horse racing course which is now a trotting venue. Since 1997, the Club has been known as the Brisbane Turf Club (BTC). Albion Park was originally established as a venue for horse racing in the mid 1880's. The race track then measured only about three and a half furlongs. In the 1890s the circumference was increased to six furlongs. The ownership of this lovely horse racing track, Albion Park changed hands many times but eventually it was taken over in 1933 by the Brisbane Amateur Turf Club.

Curragh - The Home of Irish Horse Racing

The Curragh Racecourse in Kildare is synonymous with Irish horse racing. The very first race in Ireland took place here in 1741 and it has remained the head quarters of horse racing in Ireland and one of the country's premier sporting venues. Curragh means place of the running horse and even before horse racing started here, the area where the racecourse stands today was used for chariot racing way back in the third century. Located less than an hour from Dublin, The Curragh horse racing season runs from March to October. Considered to be the best venue for flat races in the country, the major races run here include all five Classic Races featuring the Boylesports Irish 1000 and 2000 Guineas, Budweiser Irish Derby, Darley Irish Oaks and Irish Field St. Leger. The first Irish Derby took place here in 1866.
