Retirement on Lava Man’s Horizon

Lava Man is probably one of the most legendary horses on the track today. The seven year old gelding went from being a $50 000 claiming horse, to a racing phenomenon. But lately, even though he still enjoys racing, it seems that he is not able to outrun the younger talents anymore and his trainer, Doug O’Neill, believes that it is time for the racing great to make a graceful exit from horse racing. Though his departure will be a heartbreaking moment for all his fans, owners and trainer, retiring Lava Man to live out the rest of his life on green pastures is on the discussion table.

Purebred Arabian Racing Dreams

The Dubai International Arabian Race Day was held for the first time in 1982 at Kempton, and on Sunday the 20th of July 2008 approximately eighteen thousand spectators filled the grandstands at Newbury Racecourse to watch the twenty-sixth running of this wonderful racing event. Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is not only Finance Minister and Deputy Ruler of Dubai but a Thoroughbred and purebred Arabian horse breeder, has been a vocal advocate for the promotion and support of Purebred Arabian racing.

New Members Appointed to CHRB

The California Horse Racing Board is responsible for enforcing the horse racing laws of the state, ensuring that regulations are abided by, supervising racetrack wagering and taking action against the parties who violate the racing authorizations. There are seven members on the board and the last two places on the board were filled with appointments by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, namely Bo Derek and David Israel. The new appointments will have to be confirmed by the California Senate, and they will be attending their first official board meeting at the Del Mar Racecourse.

Man O’ War Stakes Surprises

The ninth event on the race card at Belmont Park Racecourse on Saturday, 12 July 2008, was the Grade 1 $500 000 Man O’ War Stakes. It is a race that is run over a distance of one and three eighth miles (eleven furlongs) and is for horses over the age of three. The Man O’ War Stakes is a turf race, and even though some of the contenders lined up for this racing event were seasoned turf veterans, there was one name in particular that stood out, a horse that was making his turf debutCurlin.

Racing Season Kicking Off Soon at Del Mar

In 1937, as the gates to the Del Mar Racecourse opened for the first time, Bing Crosby stood smiling to welcome the first spectator to the new establishment. A year later, more than twenty thousand people found themselves watching history in the making as Seabiscuit defeated Ligaroti on 12 August 1938 in the much anticipated show down. This year, on 16 July 2008, this magnificent racecourse, just north of San Diego, will continue its tradition of spellbinding horse racing action and breathtaking entertainment.

Inductees to the Delaware Park Wall of Fame

Delaware Park Racecourse was constructed and opened in 1937 and has enjoyed a long and successful history in the horse racing industry. Last year, the Delaware Park Racecourse unveiled its Delaware Park Wall of Fame for the first time, with the inaugural inductees being Willie Shoemaker, Henry Clark, Jane and Henry Lunger’s Christiana Stables, William Du Pont Jr. and Kelso. This year, five new inductees have been selected under the same criteria, consisting of a non-participant, horse, owner, trainer and jockey. These names will be inducted into the Delaware Park Wall of Fame to bring honor and pay tribute to their contribution to horse racing.
