Zenyatta Makes It 17

Every year a number of top fillies and mares, three years old and older, make their way to the Hollywood Park Racecourse in California to participate in the Vanity Invitational Handicap. This premier Grade 1 stakes race was inaugurated in 1940 and has remained one of the most popular events of the year. The 2010 Vanity Invitational Handicap took place on Sunday, 13 June, and spectators were witness to the seventeenth consecutive victory for the magnificent Zenyatta. Once again delivering a breathtaking performance, Zenyatta proved to the world why she is seen as one of the best fillies to date.

Rachel Alexandra Upcoming Races

Churchill Downs Racecourse will once again come alive with celebrity racing action, as Rachel Alexandra has been entered into the 2010 Fleur de Lis Handicap. It is a Grade II racing event for mares and fillies three-years-old and older, and has a purse amount of $200 000. Rachel Alexandra had been nominated for four events by her co-owner, Jess Jackson, and it is no surprise that Rachel Alexandra has been selected as the race favourite for the Fleur de Lis Handicap.

Workforce, Investec Derby Candidate

On Saturday, 5 June 2010, the annual Investec Derby took place with a very surprising outcome. Summer Bird Retires from Horse Racing

With the magnificent Birdstone (winner of the 2004 Belmont Stakes) as his sire, and out of the mare Hong Kong Squall, there were high hopes for race horse Summer Bird. During his career he did not disappoint, winning major stakes races and showing all the qualities of an outstanding champion. Unfortunately his horse racing career has been cut short, and the decision has been made to retire Summer Bird to stud, bringing an end to the hopes and dreams of his owners, trainer and loyal supporters.

Leopardstown Overcome by Profound Beauty

On Sunday, 30 May 2010, the Leopardstown Racecourse came alive with nail-biting horse racing action during the running of the Seamus and Rosemary McGrath Memorial Saval Beg Stakes. This anticipated event is held for four-year-old horses and older, and drew a star studded list of contenders. Age Of Aquarius, trained by Aiden O’Brian, was sent off as the race favorite, but to the surprise of spectators, Profound Beauty entered the race with fierce determination and snatched the victory away from Age Of Aquarius.

Big Buck's Reigns Supreme

On Monday, 24 May 2010, all the big names in jumps racing attended a prestigious ceremony to find out who would walk away as the Horse of the Year. The public was also able to vote in regard to selecting the winner, and five horses were in contention, namely Denman, Kauto Star, Imperial Commander, Binocular and Big Buck’'s. With the breathtaking performances delivered by Big Buck's, he was crowned the 2010 Horse of the Year, with Imperial Commander being voted second, Kauto Star in third, Denman in fourth position and fifth position went to Binocular.

Sand Windsor Victorious at Northfield Park

On Saturday, 22 May 2010, the Miller Lite Courageous Lady Pace Stakes was held at the Northfield Park racecourse. It was an event that not only produced another champion winning horse, but paid tribute to a man who made great contributions to the harness racing industry. Due to the dedication of Jack Tramonte, the Courageous Lady Pace Stakes was sponsored by Millers Lite, and he was also linked to horses such as Doolin Dalton and Helluva Hush, and for breeding the spectacular Dunkster. The late Jack Tramonte was honored by a video tribute and the Courageous Lady Pace Stakes trophy was handed over by a representative from Tramonte Distributing.
