Gearing up for Aintree

The land on which Aintree Racecourse in England now stands once belonged to William Philip Molyneux, who was the second Earl of Sefton. It was Molyneux who founded the prestigious Aintree Grand National. It is said that the first race was run in 1836, with a spectacular horse by the name of The Duke winning the event for two years consecutively. Since its inception the Aintree Grand National has grown into one of the leading events in the National Hunt horse racing industry.

Dubai Horse Racing Complex Opens

In March 2007, Dubai unveiled its plans to build the Meydan Horse Racing Complex to the world. The project took thirty-four months to complete, and on 28 January 2010 the complex opened its doors to the public and racing community. The inaugural day kicked off with breathtaking live horse racing action. If the first day of racing was anything to go by, the Meydan Horse Racing Complex in Dubai will become one of the world's major racing venues.

Big Brown's Little Girl

The new year brings new hope for the future of Girl Power with the birth of almost Triple Crown winner Big Brown's first foal. As evidenced by this past Monday's Eclipse Awards, the 2009 Thoroughbred racing season was dominated by girls, Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta, who showed their heels to the boys in victories that cemented them as living legends. Yet the best may still be to come. And it may come sooner than the birth of Rachel Alexandra "the Great's" daughter or Zenyatta's first Mondatta.

Horses – A New Horse Racing Documentary

Thousands of horse racing enthusiasts visit their favorite tracks and watch their selected horses face-off against other worthy competitors. They marvel at the victories and are disappointed with the losses. However, many may never know how much work and dedication it has taken for a horse to reach that point. In the horse racing industry the scales are delicately balanced and can tip either way, with some horses becoming stars while others are forgotten before they have even made a name for themselves. Trainers, owners and jockeys eagerly share their stories and opinions with the media and fans. While they bask in the glory, the horses that make their careers possible stand in their stables and wait patiently till they are needed, not able to share their point-of-view.

Trends in the Horse Racing Industry

Horse racing is a business, plain and simple. Like most other businesses in 2009, the revenue was down. The handle (amount of money bet) in the industry was over $12.3 billion, so there is still a lot of money to work with. Since we were introduced to the World Wide Web (internet) in the early 1990s many things have changed, including the way the horse racing game is played. The first online gambling site started about 1995 and that has grown to an estimated 2,000 internet gambling sites now available.

Magic Millions Prospect for Australia

The Magic Millions event, in Australia has seen wonderful horses rise to fame and the sale of numerous spectacular athletes over the years. In fact, the first Magic Millions Yearling Sale took place in 1986, and has grown in popularity and numbers with every passing year. The sale is a part of the Magic Millions Carnival, which lures hundreds of competitors to take part in events such as the Magic Millions Stayers Cup, Magic Millions 2 Year Old Classic, Magic Millions Open Sprint and Magic Millions Cup. While the Gold Coast has been its venue every January, it seems that plans are being made to have Magic Millions Classic moved.

The Inspiring Tale of Mariah’s Storm

It's a time tested fact that stories of strong determination to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds holds a special appeal to the general public. Such is the dramatic tale of Mariah's Storm, the inspiration behind the 2005 film 'Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story'. Mariah's Storm was born in 1991 on Crescent Farm in Kentucky, owned by Donald T. Johnson. As the daughter of Rahy and Dreaming of Anna, Mariah's Storm had bright prospects ahead of her in the world of horseracing, but her promising racing career almost came to a premature end.
