The Monkey Crouch

A new study in regard to jockey positioning on a horse, has revealed that a change in how jockeys used to ride, to the style that is known today and which was referred to as the Monkey Crouch, has increased the speeds that horses are able to run. The study has sparked discussion and criticism, as many in the industry believe that there are many factors that can affect a horse during a race, but the study has only focused on the positioning of the jockey and how the known method of riding has improved the racing industry.

Synthetic Surfaces Under the Microscope

With the Breeder’s Cup looming and the fact that Rachel Alexandra will not be attending, the talks about synthetic surfaces have begun again. It is a known fact that principle owner of Rachel Alexandra, Jess Jackson, is not a fan of synthetic surfaces, and the main reason that his champion filly will not be competing. In addition, there are new rumors circulating that many racecourses will be reverting back to dirt tracks. Scientists have put synthetic tracks under the microscope, and have revealed that they are not as safe as once thought.

The Equestrian and Racing Industry Gives Back

It is not every day that the opportunity arises to help service men and woman, who have been injured. To assist in raising funds, the Horses for Heroes initiative has recently been launched and Ascot Racecourse stepped in to offer assistance and a venue for this worthy cause to take place. The Horses for Heroes ride has united the horse racing world with riders and horse owners from a variety of other equestrian disciplines, to give back to the soldiers who risk their lives every day, to offer hope and freedom to their country.

Sea The Stars Retires

It is news that many have been dreading, but in the same breath, have been expecting. John Oxx, trainer of Sea The Stars, made the announcement that confirmed, that the magnificent racing phenomenon was retiring, and attention would now be shifted to his stud career. Sea The Stars will be retiring as one of the greatest equine athletes to have graced the horse racing industry, with spectacular victories and historical feats listed in his racing career. And though he might not be thrilling spectators in the stands anymore, it is hoped that his progeny will continue the Sea The Stars legacy.

Remounting Ban for Steeplechase Racing

Steeplechase racing has always been a controversial sport, and across the board in all racing disciplines, rules and regulations have been changed to ensure the safety of the jockeys and the equine athletes. Many feel that the new remounting ban will not affect the sport too greatly, but it does still run the risk of losing income with the new ban. Officials have commented that the positive aspects far out weight the negative, and have therefore confirmed the implementation of the ban.
