A day to Remember for Sumacha’hot
The atmosphere was electric at Laurel Park Racecourse on Saturday, 26 September 2009, and spectators were scrambling to get their bets in and seats secured. The main race of the day was the Jim McKay Maryland Million Classic, and almost twenty thousand members of the public waited patiently to see their favorite horses in live horse racing action. Speculations and predictions were given on what most believed would be the out come of the race, but one horse had other ideas, and shocked racing fans with a magnificent victory, namely Sumacha’hot.

Summer Squall Remembered
There are many people who mourn the loss of the great stallion, Summer Squall. He did not only make a great impact on horse racing, but touched the lives of so many. He was not the biggest horse on the track, but the athlete with the most courage. Summer Squall took each loss in his stride and saw it as an opportunity to learn and perform better in his next event, which led to the great horse being retired from racing with thirteen victories off twenty starts and career earnings of over $1.8 million.

Ventura makes History at Woodbine
Each year, the Woodbine Mile is held at the Woodbine Racecourse in Canada, and is one of the prestigious Grade 1 horse racing events of the year. It is for horses that are three years old and older and has a purse amount of $1 million. This year, the Woodbine Mile was held on Sunday, 20 September 2009. To everyone’s surprise, the race that has always been dominated by the male contenders, took an unexpected turn as the filly, Ventura, crossed the finish line in first position and made Woodbine Mile history.

Unveiling of Prix l’Arc de Triomphe Trophy
On the third and forth of October 2009, the entire horse racing community will have their attention turned to the prestigious Qatar Prix l’Arc de Triomphe weekend, where sixteen thoroughbred horse races will the held. Longchamp Racecourse in Paris will once again stage a horse racing extravaganza that will lure the best equine athletes from across the globe and with millions of euros in purse money, it is one of the most anticipated events on the racing calendar. And to celebrate its eighty eight year of racing, a new trophy has been revealed that has been designed specifically for this years’ event.

Tribute paid to Ismael Valenzuela
While the horse racing community mourns the loss of one of their most beloved jockeys, it also gives everyone the opportunity to reflect on a spectacular racing career, the determination to succeed and the love of a father to create a world far greater than his own, for his children. The life of Ismael “Milo” Valenzuela, tell a tale of a man who grew up in poverty, overcame the obstacles of being uneducated and rose to be a Hall of Fame jockey, riding some of the most famous horses and showing a true natural talent for the art of horse racing. Ismael “Milo” Valenzuela became a legend.

Australian Whip War
The use of whips has been a subject of concern and contention for the horse racing industry, all over the world. New whips with padding have been designed and rules have been changed to avoid cruelty towards the horses and regulate the use of whips. The Australian Racing Board have recently released a new set of rules in regard to whip usage that has created concern and anger in horse racing industry in Australia. Stewards have backed the new regulations that have been created by the Australian Racing Board while jockeys, owners and trainers fight to find clarity and demand changes.

Oaklawn Focused On 2010
Oaklawn Racecourse has enjoyed a very successful racing season for 2009, and with their attention focused on the 2010 horse racing season, track authorities have looked towards a new approach for their coming season. Instead of increasing their number of races, they have decided to retain their racing schedule, but to increase the purse amounts of many of their racing events. This will no doubt make their season more attractive to horsemen, and with thirty stakes races being offered by the Oaklawn Racecourse, there will be thrilling horse racing action featured next year.
