There were quite a few nervous moments before and during the running of the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, as a great number of European horses were entered into this year’s race. Hosted by Flemington Racecourse, the Melbourne Cup is known to be one of the premier horse racing events on the racing calendar of Australia, and with seven of the contenders being overseas entries, the pressure for a local horse to win could almost be felt. And Australia was not disappointed, as Viewed, trained by legendary trainer Bart Cummings, finished in first place.

Hystericalady: A Three Million Dollar Horse
The Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale took place on Monday, 3 November 2008, and even though there were a few horses that sold for average prices due to the economic situation, there were also a few that stood out and fetched staggeringly high prices. One of those horses was Hystericalady, bought by John Ferguson on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum for $3 million. It was the highest price of the day, and it is expected that the Ruler of Dubai will be settling Hystericalady into his breeding program, rather than continuing her horse racing career.

War of Attrition Victorious at Punchestown
On Thursday, the 16th of October 2008, Punchestown became the scene of an exciting showdown between two former Cheltenham Gold Cup champions. It is a Grade 3 racing event for four year old horses and older, and is run over a distance of two miles and six furlongs. But the horse racing veterans proved that age is merely a number, and that comebacks are possible in the world of horse racing.
