Over seventeen thousand loyal horse racing fans made their way to Suffolk Downs on Saturday 22 September 2008 to watch the 66th running of the Massachusetts Handicap. Of course the greatest attraction of the day was to catch a glimpse of the magnificent Commentator, who stole the show. Finding himself up against many younger horses, Commentator turned to his experience as a racehorse and his unrivaled determination to win the Massachusetts Handicap by a staggering fourteen lengths.

All Clear for O’Brian
The Melbourne Cup is one of the biggest horse racing events on the Australian racing calendar, and will take place on 4 November 2008. Big names in horse racing, such as Aiden O’Brian had been reserving their confirmation of participation, awaiting the quarantine procedures and decisions by the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service. With the approval by the Australian authorities for Ballydoyle stables to be cleared as a quarantine facility, it seems that O’Brian will be heading for Australia and the $4.4 million (A$5.6 million) Melbourne Cup.

Curlin Confirmed for Jockey Club Gold Cup
After his magnificent victory at the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes, which was held at the Saratoga Racecourse on 30 August 2008, everyone was waiting anxiously to find out where Curlin was going to make his next start. The 2007 Horse of the Year has always received the support of thousands of fans in New York State and has enjoyed successes at their racecourses. For these two reasons, it has been decided that Curlin will start in the 2008 Jockey Club Gold Cup, and there is a lot riding on this anticipated performance.

Australian Horse of the Year – Weekend Hussler
Horses and members of the Australian horse racing industry were honored in an awards ceremony on Monday, 1 September 2008, where Weekend Hussler was named the Australian Horse of the Year. The Australian awards ceremony immortalized eleven names, and some did not come as a surprise for the industry. Achievements and magnificent performances delivered by Weekend Hussler over the last year made his selection as Horse of the Year an anticipated announcement, while others were veterans of the industry to whom the honor was long overdue.

Vineyard Haven Shines for Frankel
Trainer, Bobby Frankel enjoyed a very successful weekend at Saratoga Racecourse, leaving the meeting with eleven winning performances. First Defense gave an astonishing performance in the Forego Handicap, while other horses such as Go For Wand and Ginger Punch also brought victory home with their magnificent performances. In the Grade 2 $250 000 Hopeful Stakes, which took place on Monday, 1 September 2008, another surprise was waiting for Frankel in the form of Vineyard Haven.

Woodward Victory for Curlin
The “Graveyard of Champions” legend of Saratoga Racecourse did not apply to Curlin on Saturday, 30 August 2008, as he soared into the lead to win the Woodward Stakes. Winning the Woodward Stakes not only reaffirmed his champion status, but pushed him into second place for all-time horse racing career earnings. It was the first time that Curlin had raced at the Saratoga Racecourse, making the Woodward a highly anticipated race.
