Magic Millions Weanlings
The 2008 Magic Millions National Sale started on Tuesday, the 27th of May. The Gold Coast was once again overrun by buyers and sellers of the horse racing industry and while there are many horses on offer, it has been a successful time for the weanlings. Weanlings are approximately six months old and have been recently weaned from the mares. And even though they are too young to race, many buyers invest in weanlings to resell them at the yearling sales.

Sadler’s Wells retired from Stud
May 2008, will be remembered by the horse racing community as the month when the racing industry lost two of its greatest sires. Storm Cat was retired on the heels of the announcement from Coolmore Stud, that Sadler’s Wells will be spending the rest of his life in the comfort of the stud farm, in full retirement. Both horses were retired due to their age beginning to cause a decline in fertility. Sadler’s Wells retires as a legend and a champion horse.

Gavin Cook Crowned World Amateur Champ
The 2008 World Cup of Amateur Racing came to a nail-biting end at Meadowlands on Wednesday, the 21st of May 2008. It is an event that lured twelve of the world’s best amateur drivers to the six days if racing, hosted at six different tracks, which included Yonkers, Balmoral, Maywood, Freehold and Monticello. It was a tough competition for all concerned, and the $25 000 trotting competition brought the out the best in everyone.

Timonium Auction of Dreams
The Fasig-Tipton Midlantic auction took place at the Timonium Fairgrounds on 19 to 20 May 2008, and nothing could stop the crowds from attending, not even the rainy skies. With over three hundred two year old horses waiting for new owners, it was not only a big event for breeders and sellers, but for the everyday people who take part in horse racing for the joy of it.

New Zealand’s $9million Racing Boost
Over the recent weeks, many discussions have arisen in regard to big international events luring horses away from local racing in New Zealand. The better the purses and recognition of a race, the more great names in racing seem to fill the starting gates. It is a problem that is faced by racing authorities in New Zealand and Australia. But the government of New Zealand has brought forward a three year budget initiative that will boost the horse racing industry and its racing events.

Takeover Target Victorious
Australian horses, Takeover Target and Magnus took the KrisFlyer International Sprint, which took place in Singapore over the weekend, by storm. Amidst a lineup of formidable competitors, the Australians did not show a moment’s hesitation as they led the field to the finish line. No-one expected much of the eight-year old Takeover Target, who is finishing his farewell to horse racing tour, but it seems that the tough and determined racehorse still has the drive to win.
