Old Fashioned, new racing hope for Jones
Devastated, is the only word that can be used to describe how trainer Larry Jones felt when he saw his most promising horse, Eight Belles, go down just after she had magnificently finished in second place in the Kentucky Derby. His joy at seeing his beautiful filly leave her male counterparts behind in one of the most prestigious horse racing events of the year, was replaced by grief, disbelief and a loss for words, as the news came back that Eight Belles would have to be euthanized.

But sadly, the excitement and confidence in The Pamplemousse team has been shattered, with the news that this spectacular colt will not be able to run in the Kentucky Derby.

All Eyes on I Want Revenge
The Wood Memorial is a Grade 1 horse racing event that will take place at the Aqueduct Racecourse on Saturday, 4 April 2009 and has a purse amount of $750 000. It is an important race as it is the final preparation event for the Kentucky Derby, for horses in New York. A competitive field of three year old contenders will be at the starting line on Saturday, but there is one horse that most spectators will have their eyes on, namely I Want Revenge.

The Sunland Derby surprise
Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino are getting ready for major horse racing action on Sunday, 29 March 2009. It is the running of the seventh Sunland Derby, and besides for this exciting event have a lucrative purse amount as incentive, a little bonus has been added to the race, in hope of luring bigger names in the racing industry to the Sunland Derby. Unfortunately, the bonus will not come into effect this year, but it is almost certain the new changes will attract the attention of the horse racing industry.

Gearing up for the Lane’s End Stakes
The Turfway Park racecourse in Kentucky is buzzing with activity as stewards and racecourse officials go through their paces to ensure that everything is perfect for Saturday’s horse racing action. To many the Grade II Lane’s End Stakes is a very important event, not only because it has a purse of $500 000, but it is a prep event for the Kentucky Derby. It will be the 38th running of the Lane’s End Stakes. A few horses have already made the news in regard to their abilities to win; and expectations are running high.

On Friday, 13 March 2009, the prestigious Cheltenham Festival came to a close, and if spectators thought the first two days of racing was exciting, the last two most certainly did not disappoint. A few surprises were in store for the jumps racing community, as racing greats won back their titles and others were defeated by upcoming stars. It was a festival of disappointment for some, astounding performances for others and magnificent victories for horse racing enthusiasts to be witness to.
