Bulwark takes Chester Roodee Racecourse by Surprise

On Wednesday, 7 May 2008, approximately eighteen thousand spectators filled the Chester Roodee Racecourse in anticipation of the Chester Cup. Bustling with excitement, bets were made on the winning favorites for the day. The name Bulwark had hardly featured, ending up as the 33-1 long shot. Many times before fans had placed money on Bulwark only to be disappointed by his seeming lack of interest, when all he needed was a little understanding and a fresh start.

Canadian Hall of Fame Nominees

On the 20th of May, the names of the inductees to the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame will be announced. Until then, the twenty-two nominees will have to wait patiently to find out if their names will be read at the induction ceremony, taking place in August. A twenty person committee has been announced to vote, and to be inducted, a nominee must receive a seventy-five percent vote. Of the twenty-two nominees, there are few names that stand out above the rest, and that many are hoping will be inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.

Record Sale of Auckland Reactor

Everyone in the harness racing community of New Zealand would agree that Auckland Reactor is probably the best three year old pacer that the country has seen in while. Sired by the legendary Mach Three, breeders and owners, Tony and Anne Parker have just signed a deal with a North American group, to sell Auckland Reactor for an unbelievable $4 million. It is said that this is the highest selling price to date, in the harness racing industry.

Record Budget for Australian Harness Racing

The duties of the Racing and Wagering Western Australia, or RWWA, includes regulating and supervising all racing aspects of harness racing, thoroughbred racing and greyhound racing that take place in Western Australia. This entails overseeing rules, drug testing, promoting welfare and development, loans, clubs, jockeys and acting as liaison between government authorities and the racing community. Racing budgets are also a major part of their responsibilities, and they have just announced a record budget for the harness racing 2008/2009 financial year, of $30.6 million.

South Africa Heading to the Tatts Cox Plate

The Tatts Cox Plate is one of Australia’s most prestigious racing events. It is run over a distance of 2040 meters and is a Group 1 race that has a purse of $3 million. Moonee Valley Racecourse is host to the event, which will take place on 28 October 2008, and already speculation over contenders has begun. Violencello won the first W.S. Cox Plate in 1922, which was named in honor of William Samuel Cox, the founder of the Monee Valley Racecourse.

2008 Hall of Fame Inductees

On the 4th of August 2008, at Saratoga Springs in New York, six new names will be added to distinguished list of people and horses who have made it into the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame. When the nominees were announced earlier this year, everyone knew that it would be a tough decision for the Historic Review Committee, as many deserving names had made it onto the nominations list. But they finally decided on Edgar Prado (Jockey), Carl Nafzger (Trainer), Ismael Valenzuela (Retired Jockey), Ancient Title (Winning horse of the 1970’s), Inside Information (Champion Filly) and Manila (A grass champion during the 1980’s).

The Return of the New York State Harness Breeders Awards

The New York State Harness Breeders Awards were put into place in the year 1977, and for fourteen years the program gave monetary awards to breeders who were able to breed horses that excelled on the track. Due to the revenue of the sport becoming too low, the New York State Harness Breeders Awards fell away in 1991. Now, after seventeen years of absence from the world of New York harness racing, it has been announced that the awards will be returned.
