Weekend Racing at Belmont

Belmont Park was again the venue of great upset and unexpected triumph on Saturday, 28 June 2008, as the Grade 1 Mother Goose Stakes and Grade 1 Suburban Handicap thrilled, excited and disappointed racing fans. With each spectator having their own favorite horse in the respective horse racing events, it seemed to be a weekend for the long shots and surprises. But, as many in the horse racing industry know, nothing is cast in stone, and in racing anything can happen.

Golden Victory for Mast Track

The Hollywood Gold Cup took place at Hollywood Park on Saturday, 28 June 2008. With Heatseeker being scratched on Friday, injured with a massively swollen ankle, many spectators turned their attention to Go Between to replace the race favorite. But as the field of nine horses stepped into the starting gates, it was felt that the Hollywood Gold Cup was anyone’s race. The contenders for the racing action included the following horses, in order of their gate positions: Mast Track, Perfect Drift, Tiago in number four (gate three left open due to Heatseekers scratching), Racketeer, Student Council, Go Between, McCann’s Mojave, Big Booster and Spice Route.

Show Stopper at Barretts Sale

At this year’s Barretts Summer Sale, sales had dropped significantly due to the lack of availability of horses for sale. But is still did not put a dampner on proceedings, as a few horses stood out in regard to sales figures. The Barretts Summer Sale was still considered to be a success, as there were happy buyers and smiling sellers at the end of the one day horse sale. Providing a service to the trainers and horse owners is the main priority of the Barretts Sale, and therefore the sale was held despite a lack of horses.

Thrill After Dark Lights Up Les Bois Park

Tuesday nights at Les Bois Park is Ladies Night. It is usually an evening filled with spectacular night horse racing, entertainment and fun. Last Tuesday evening, 17 June 2008, was no different as the ladies and their friends filled the stands in anticipation of their featured race, race number seven. The $12 550 Winning Colors Stakes was filled with a great line up of worthy contenders, and the mares and fillies entered into the race were waiting for their chance to shine at Les Bois Park.

Duke of Marmalade finds Success at Royal Ascot

Trainer Aiden O’Brian and jockey Johnny Murtagh have enjoyed a very successful Royal Ascot campaign this year. With Henrythenavigator winning the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes and Haradasun running home victorious in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes, the duo could not have asked for more. But they had another horse waiting in the wings for his chance to showcase his abilities and rake in another Group 1 win for his trainer and jockey. Duke of Marmalade used his strength and determination to take the lead in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at the Royal Ascot.

Curlin Still in Top Form

On Saturday, Curlin once again proved that he deserves his Horse of the Year title. He has not raced on United States soil for a few months now, and after a successful international campaign everyone thought that Curlin might need good rest before taking on his first race on his return. But Curlin was not deterred by facing a full field of contenders at Churchill Downs. He dug deep, found his gap and steamed ahead to the finish line.
