Curlin – Horse of the Year at Eclipse Awards
Just over a year ago no one would have guessed that the beautiful male horse, getting ready for his first racing start, would be outperforming many of his rivals and making a name for himself. Curlin was bred by Fares Farm and was bought after he won a maiden race at Gulfstream Park. He was transferred to the capable hands of trainer, Steve Asmussen, and is currently waiting to continue his training at Fair Grounds.

Possible Return of Horse Racing to China
The glitz, glamour and excitement of horse racing has been absent from China since 1949. In a country where gambling is a favorite pastime, many residents in China have resorted to illegal gambling, to partake in a game with Lady Luck. When the communist government came into power in China, many regulations changed, including those related to horse racing, and for years the people of China watched and waited for the day that horse racing would return to their country.

Basin Banannie – Indiana-Bred Horse of the Year
In the world of horse racing, top honors means receiving the Horse of the Year Award. Horses, owners, trainers and jockeys throw their hearts and efforts into every race to perform at their peak and to be able to be contenders at the end of the year awards. 2007 was definitely a wonderful year for M.Y. Stables, which walked away with many of the most prestigious titles. And one of those horse racing victories, was the Indiana-bred, Basin Banannie, being named the Horse of the Year.

Somethinaboutlaura Continues Racing in 2008
Somethinaboutlaura is considered by many to be a living legend in Northern California’s horse racing circles. After Somethingaboutlaura won the Pacific Heights Stakes on 1 December 2007, horse racing fans were disappointed to hear from her trainer and co-owner Jerry Holldendorfer that she was likely to run only two more races before being sold for breeding purposes or retired. This situation changed, however, when Somethinaboutlaura raced to victory in the Campanile Stakes at Golden Gate Fields on 1 January 2008 and now she is set to race right through 2008.

New Life for Stradbroke Week
The Stradbroke Handicap is a race that has been a part of the Australian racing industry since 1890. It was named in honor of legendary architect Lord Stradbroke, and was catapulted into the premier racing arena when it raised its stakes to $1 000 000 in 1996. Stradbroke Week is known as an event that is focused on racing, and in the year 2000 AAMI became the sponsor of this much anticipated racing event on the Brisbane calendar.

Golden Gate Fields’ New Track Surface
The California Horse Racing Board has demanded that its five biggest horse racing tracks have synthetic track surfaces installed before the end of 2007 if they want to continue racing at their establishments. To adhere to the new ruling, $10 million has been spent on the Golden Gate Fields’ new track surface, a revolutionary surface that has already proved its worth at international racecourses such as in Hong Kong, England and Dubai. But it is the first time the Tapeta Footings surface has been installed at a racecourse in Northern California, and it is going to have to make believers out of the critics.

The announcement made by Magna Entertainments Corporation, owners of the Great Lakes Downs horse racing facility, to close the track down by 6 November has sent shock waves through the thoroughbred horse racing fraternity in Michigan State. Great Lakes Downs is the only thoroughbred horse racing facility in Michigan and its closure will have a devastating ripple effect through the industry. To preserve the future of racing and compensate for the many jobs that will be lost, a new project has been created, the Pinnacle Race Course development.
