The 28th of September 2010 will remain a date few members of the horse racing industry will ever forget. Two breathtaking careers came to a sudden end, and while one legend will continue to live out her life as a brood mare, the other will be lost to the racing world forever. With such magnificent racing careers to look back on, it was announced with great sadness that Rachel Alexandra had retired from horse racing, and that Real Quiet passed away on 27 September 2010. Blame Takes the Whitney
It most certainly looks like winning fillies such as Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta will have extremely difficult competition in the future, as a magnificent performance during the running of the Whitney Handicap Invitational saw to it that Blame secured his place in the winners circle. Even though Quality Road was chosen as the favorite for the 2010 edition of this prestigious event, Blame came through with more determination and speed than anyone expected him to. Quality Road was believed to be one of the fastest horses in the world, now it seems to be a title that should go to Blame instead.

Haskell Conquered by Lookin' At Lucky
With a $1m purse to be won, the Haskell Invitational Handicap is one of the premier horse racing events on the racing calendar. Inaugurated in 1968, the race was established to pay tribute to Amory L Haskell, late chairman and president of the Monmouth Park Racecourse. The event was changed from a handicap to an invitational handicap in 1981. It is a Grade 1 racing event for three year old race horses, and entries into this race are done by invitation only. Needless to say, some of the most successful and high profile horses are invited to participate, and the 2010 Haskell Invitational took place on Sunday, 1 August 2010.

Saratoga Racecourse Under Threat
One of the most historic horse racing facilities in the United States of America is the Saratoga Racecourse. It opened its doors on 3 August 1863, and was also mentioned by James Bond author, Ian Fleming, in his novel Diamonds Are Forever. Its fame and popularity has lasted for decades, and is home to Grade 1 racing events such as the Alabama Stakes, Travers Stakes, Woodward Stakes and the Whitney Handicap.
