Pete Scarmardo, the humble Success Story

The world of horse racing is competitive. It can also be a cut throat business, and wealthy owners and successful trainers can often be spotted a mile away. Strutting their success at each racing event, some horse owners enjoy the notoriety and spotlight that comes with each victory and horse racing champion. But then there are others that are hardly spoken about, as they avoid the celebrity status and go about their daily business as any other member of the public would. One of these humble horse racing success stories involves a respected and admired member of the racing community, Pete Scarmardo.

Seabiscuit honored

The 2009 Preakness Stakes, which was hosted by the Pimlico Racecourse, did not only provide spectators with thrilling live horse racing action, but also held a ceremony on the 14th of May, to celebrate one of the greatest thoroughbred racehorses that ever lived. Together with the U.S. Postal Service, the Seabiscuit Heritage Foundation paid tribute to the legendary Seabiscuit, and reminded the horse racing community, and racing enthusiasts, that faith, love and determination, can bring hope to the masses and see a horse overcome numerous obstacles, to become a champion of the racecourse and millions hearts.

Somebeachsomewhere, Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame glory

It has been a long time since the harness racing community had a magnificent hero such as Somebeachsomewhere. If anyone had any doubts in the sport of harness racing, it was erased by the spectacular performances of Somebeachsomewhere. Through his years on the race track, this wonderful athlete has been honored by numerous awards, but this year, he will be inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, to engrave his name into racing history and remind those who come after him, of his breathtaking achievements.

Jumps Racing future hangs in the balance

Victoria and South Australia are the only two remaining states, in Australia, that still feature jumps racing events. Last year, jumps racing was brought to a halt pending new recommendations in regard to the number of fatalities suffered by equine athletes, but now, the entire sport for these two states is hanging in the balance and depending the outcome, it could see the end of jumps racing in Australia altogether. Emotions ran high this week as Racing Victoria sat down to discuss the future of the sport.

It is all in the hoof

When Mick Peterson first walked into a racecourse, approximately twelve years ago, he did not know much about horses, and even less in regard to the horse racing industry. But there was something about horse racing that kept pulling him back to the racecourse, and it was not the excitement of race day, it was the opportunity to use his skills to bring improvement and safety to the sport. As a mechanical engineering professor at the University of Maine, Peterson created a devise to prevent injury which many were skeptical of at first.

Simulators, invaluable rehabilitation

Many jockeys are injured during their horse racing career, some suffering more life threatening injuries than others, but one fact remains the same for all of them, they need rehabilitation and a clean bill of health before being allowed on a horse again. It is sometimes difficult to judge how a jockey will react or perform after they have recovered, but there is a safer way to reintroduce jockeys to racing, namely the racehorse simulator. This might seem like a strange form of rehabilitation, but with the major advances in racehorse simulators, they are most definitely an asset to the industry.

Frost Could be Left Out in the Cold

Weather conditions have a great impact on horse racing and racing events around the world. Rain, wind or even extreme heat, can bring a racing event to its knees and be the cause of many frustrated spectators and horse owners when an event is cancelled. Each country battles with their own unique weather conditions, and in the United Kingdom, one of their weather enemies are frost. Fortunately, ongoing research seems to be on the brink of finding a solution to dealing with frost, and bringing relief to many racecourses, horsemen and loyal fans.
