Hats Off to Gemswick Park

Features - Editor - 06 January 2009

Old Hat was a phenomenal race horse during her time on the track. She became a household name, and in 1964 and 1965 she was crowned the American Champion Older Female Horse. In the six years she spent as a race horse, Old Hat won thirty-five of her eighty career starts and placed eighteen times. It is for her outstanding performances and the highly regarded legacy she left behind that the Old Hat Stakes was named in her honor.

The Wisconsin Harness Racing Hall of Fame is managed by the Wisconsin Harness Racing Association and has four categories for nominations and inductions: Living, Immortal, Equine and Family. For a horse to be inducted into the Wisconsin Harness Racing Hall of Fame, a horse must have achieved some success, either during their racing career or in stud and must have performed exceptionally when compared to other horses in Wisconsin. The latest member of the harness racing community to be bestowed with induction honor is Crafty Sailor.

Tizfiz Shines for DeLeon

Features - Editor - 05 January 2009 Article Illustration

Tizfiz was bred by Diamond A Racing in Kentucky, and was sired by Tiznow, out of the Go for Gin mare, Gin Running. Up until the 4th of October 2008, she was trained by Richard Mandella, but was claimed for $50 000 at Oak Tree for new owners, Brian Kahn and the O’Neill Trust, by trainer Ralph DeLeon. DeLeon, who has won many racing events, was looking for his first graded stakes win on the 4th of January 2009, and found it in the outstanding effort made by Tizfiz and her jockey, Agapito Delgadillo.

Oaklawn Park Takes Precautions

Horse Racing News - Editor - 05 January 2009 Article Illustration

Over a thousand horses have descended on the Oaklawn Park Racecourse in anticipation of the start of the new racing season, which kicks off on 16 January 2009. Many horses have been moved ahead of time to be able to enjoy training sessions and settle into their new surroundings. The transfer however was halted for a brief period, as many racecourses were dealing with the threat of the highly contagious Equine Herpes Virus, and even though none of the horses at the Oaklawn Park Racecourse tested positive, they were not taking any chances, especially with the opening of the racing season looming.
