Preakness Stakes Results

The 135th Preakness Stakes was run at Pimlico Racecourse on Saturday, 15 May 2010, and saw the hopes of a Triple Crown victory fade away, as Super Saver just did not have it in him on the day. With the Triple Crown eluding the racing public and community for another year, the disappointment at the racecourse was tangible, even though the excitement and joy from Lookin At Lucky fans and connections was overwhelming, as he crossed the finish line to be crowned the 2010 Preakness Stakes champion.

Lookin At Lucky is part owned by Mike Pegram, who was focused on his horse’s wellbeing, and hoping that his path would be clear when he took the turn for home – and it was. Ridden by jockey, Martin Garcia, the victory was the fifth Preakness Stakes win for trainer Bob Baffert, who was beaming with pride in the winners’ circle, after the race. For Garcia, it was a moment to remember. Just a few years ago, this talented jockey was still working in a deli, before making the career change, and did not even know much about racing or the Triple Crown, let alone dream of winning one. Many thought that Super Saver, winner of the Kentucky Derby, would be a tough competitor, but on race day, he did not have anything to give jockey, Calvin Borel. Nonetheless, Borel was not too upset with his horses’ eighth place, saying: “He’s a good horse, I’ll have a lot of fun with him in the future, but he just came up empty today.”

As Lookin At Lucky took the victory from his eleven other competitors, First Dude followed him home in second place, and Jackson Bend was in third. The last leg of the Triple Crown, the Belmont Stakes, will take place on 5 June 2010, but Baffert has already confirmed that Lookin At Lucky will not be competing in this event. Fans and supporters will have to wait till the 1st of August 2010, to see Lookin At Lucky perform again, as this could be his next career start. The Haskell Invitational will be hosted by Monmouth Park.
