Set in the picturesque surroundings of Lincolnshire, just outside the quaint town of Market Rasen in England, the Market Rasen Racecourse is one of the most popular National Hunt racecourses in the country. It is a right-handed course that is just over a mile in circumference and although National Hunt racing events are usually held in the winter, the Market Rasen Racecourse offers all year round National Hunt racing. At present, the racecourse is gearing up for one of its biggest events of the year, the Totesport and The Journal Ladies Day, also known as the Toteswinger Summer Plate Day, which takes place on Saturday, 19 July 2008.

In the horse racing industry there are a few power houses that are known to all, and being the second biggest racetrack holdings company, Penn National Gaming Inc. packs a mighty punch when it makes decisions in regard to racing. Their new health and safety initiatives, released on 15 July 2008, will hopefully encourage other holdings companies and privately owned racecourses to follow suit, as Penn National Gaming Inc. are determined to improve the safety of horses and ensure that their welfare is taken seriously.

The California Horse Racing Board is responsible for enforcing the horse racing laws of the state, ensuring that regulations are abided by, supervising racetrack wagering and taking action against the parties who violate the racing authorizations. There are seven members on the board and the last two places on the board were filled with appointments by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, namely Bo Derek and David Israel. The new appointments will have to be confirmed by the California Senate, and they will be attending their first official board meeting at the Del Mar Racecourse.

The Japan Racing Horse Association had been very reserved on commenting on their July select sale, which started on Tuesday, 15 July 2008. Due to the very slow economy in Japan at the moment, it was feared that sales would be few and that the success of the sale was hanging in the balance. And even though the sales figures were a little down from last year, the sale was still a huge success, with the first line of Deep Impact offspring getting a lot of attention and one foal in particular hitting the mark with a record sale price.

It seems that there is just no stopping Aidan O’Brian this year, as he steams ahead after securing his thirteenth Group 1 win for 2008, with winning seven classics in a row and the four noteworthy classics in Ireland. Every time O’Brian steps out at a horse racing event, everything appears to go his way, and he is looking good so far to win the British Trainers Championship again after winning it in 2007. And the horse that took the thirteenth victory for him was Moonstone, during the Darley Irish Oaks.

The ninth event on the race card at Belmont Park Racecourse on Saturday, 12 July 2008, was the Grade 1 $500 000 Man O’ War Stakes. It is a race that is run over a distance of one and three eighth miles (eleven furlongs) and is for horses over the age of three. The Man O’ War Stakes is a turf race, and even though some of the contenders lined up for this racing event were seasoned turf veterans, there was one name in particular that stood out, a horse that was making his turf debut – Curlin.
