Where: Hollywood Park Racetrack, California, United States
Description:
The Hollywood Gold Cup was first inaugurated in 1938 at the famously beautiful Hollywood Park Racetrack in California. Today it carries a purse of $750 000.00 and is one of the main races to take place on the West Coast of the United States.
From 1938 up to 1997 the Hollywood Gold Cup was considered a handicap race, but from 1997 it then took on the conditions required for a weight-for-age. This of course only lasted eight years before returning back to its original status of the handicap format.
The ‘Gold Cup’ is open to thoroughbreds of three years old and up is considered a Grade I stakes horse race that covers a distance of 1 ¼ miles on a left handed dirt track. Interestingly in 1980 the first woman trainer, Mary Lou Tuck won the first Hollywood Gold Cup.
