The beginning of April will see the annual Ashland Stakes once again taking place at the beautiful Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, with a purse of half a million dollars.

There is certainly something special about the Ashland Stakes, which in one of a few races restricted to the racing of thoroughbred fillies of three years of age.

This grade 1 race first made an impact in 1936 when the first two events to take place were opened to both fillies and mares starting at 3 years of age and older. However, it was only in 1940 that the Ashland Stakes once again took place, this time it was made exclusively for three year olds fillies. Since its beginning there have been a variety of distances run which seems to be a normal trend in the history of most horse racing events that take place. Today it covers a distance of 8.5 furlongs on dirt.
