The Stephen Foster Handicap was named after the famous songwriter Stephen Foster, who became renowned for being the author to the state song of Kentucky, commonly known as ‘My Old Kentucky Home’.
The Stephen Foster Handicap, with a purse of $750 000.00, is an all American dirt race for 3-year-olds and up, run over a distance of 1 and a quarter miles at the beautiful Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.
It was only in the year 1875 that Churchill Downs officially opened its gates, with two the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky being run in that opening year. In 1986 Churchill Downs was honoured with the status of National Historic landmark.
