It was in the early 1939 that the Diana Handicap was first inaugurated. It covers a distance of one and one-eighth miles. Today the Handicap race is regarded as s Grade I and carries a purse of $500 000.00.
Interestingly, from the time of its inception in 1939, the race took place mainly at Saratoga’s main track. Fillies and mares were required to cover a mile and a furlong in distance, this took place until 1973. However during World War II from 1943 – 1945 the race was run at the famous Belmont Park.
