Description:

With a purse of $600 000.00, the Metropolitan Handicap is a popular horse race event that usually takes place during late May.

The Metropolitan is considered a thoroughbred American Grade I horse race and is open to three year olds and above of both genders.

Interestingly, because the Metropolitan is a race run over a one mile distance, it has consequently been nicknamed the ‘Met Mile’.

The ‘Met Mile’ makes up the first race for the ‘New York Handicap Triple Series’ and is followed suit by the Suburban Handicap and lastly by the Brooklyn Handicap. It was in 1891 that the Met Mile was first run at the Morris Park with a distance of 1 1/8 mile. In 1904 it was relocated to Belmont Park and from there it would have a history of moving between there and the Aqueduct Racetrack. Interestingly It was not run in the following years: 1895, 1911and 1912.
