Wood Memorial Stakes - United States, New York

Races - United States - New York

When: 13h00, Saturday, 05 April 2008

Where: Aqueduct Racecourse, New York, United States

Description:

The Wood Memorial Stakes first took its place in 1925 and was named in honour of Eugene D. Wood, a famous New York politician who was founder as well as past president of the old Jamaica Racetrack.

Each year in early April the Wood Memorial Stakes is held. Regarded as the a ‘major prep race’ for other top races, history has seen 11 winners of the Wood Memorial race go on to win victoriously at the Kentucky Derby and four take the Triple Crown.

With a purse of $750 00.00 it certainly is a race that has caught the attention of many race goers and was of particular interest when Secretariat finished in third place in 1973. Although not winning the Wood Memorial Stakes, Secretariat would forever hold the history books for becoming the first ever Triple Crown winner in almost 25 years, with track records still standing today from two of the three races competed in the internationally famous series.
