Description:

The ‘Little Brown Jug’, which makes up the middle leg of the “Triple Crown of Harness Racing for Pacers”, has to be one of the most popular races, along with the Hambletonian. It was in 1937 that the ‘Little Brown Jug’.

The ‘Little Brown Jug’ is open to pacing standard bred horses of three years of age and is held on the third Thursday just after Labor Day. In 1946 the initial jug held a purse of $35 358.00 and was won by Ensign Hanover and the talented as well as successful driver Wayne “Curly” Smart, who would become the track superintendent, maintaining what is known as the fastest racing strip for its size.

The race is done in heats, with the first heat split into several divisions. The top finishers then return and race in the second heat. Winner of both heats wins the ‘Little Brown Jug’. In cases when a horse does not win both heats then a ‘raceoff’ takes place between the first division winners of the heat and the winner from the second heat, from there the champion is then determined.

The Little Brown Jug will take place from 14 to 18 September 2008.
