A gang of thieves has been arrested recently by the New Jersey authorities for manipulating horse racing outcomes through the use of a banned blood enhancer, EPO. Suspicions of horse racing fraud were aroused in Middlesex County when horses from a particular stable suddenly began performing out of trend.
Stable owners and their accomplices must have been at the racket for some time, because investigations show large bank balances and cash assets with the suspected criminals. Harness racing has been troubled by reports of race fixing for years, so this decisive action comes not a day too soon. The arrests have been possible only through diligent and painstaking investigations, and the entire punter community will be grateful to the authorities in Freehold, East Windsor and Englishtown for helping to restore the confidence of the entire sports betting community.
Horses do need prescription medicine for their routine health issues, and racing sheets should always indicate details of medicines given to competing horses on or near the day of an event. Lists exist of medicines that can be given to race horses for genuine reasons. Doping is a big deal in the Olympics and other events which involve human sports people. It is high time that we enforced the same rigor in horse racing.
