The Kohinoor of Indian Horse Racing

Horse racing is one of the most enduring symbols of British Colonial rule of the Indian sub-continent. The sport has avid followings all over India and its neighboring countries, ever since they all became independent. Mumbai, called Bombay until recently, was a major textile center during British rule, and has always been a key port and a financial center as well. Mumbai's race course, appropriately named after the Hindu Goddess of wealth Mahalaxmi, is the pride and joy of a metropolis which struggles to preserve its wide open spaces and greenery.

Mumbai resides by the Arabian Sea, and it is too warm during the summer for horse racing. Mumbai also has a ferocious monsoon season, so horse racing is restricted between October and May every year. The Indian Derby is considered by the local horse racing fraternity to be the jewel in the crown of the horse racing season. It is held each February, which coincides nicely with the peak tourist season of India as well.

The Indian Derby is more than a mere horse racing event! It is a star date in the social calendar of Mumbai's bludgeoning glitterati, who arrive at the race course in luxurious automobiles, dressed with finery fit for Royalty! The race course has a multi-cuisine restaurant which serves hearty fare, and the expansive grounds are also used for social events.

The Indian Derby, which is run at the Mahalaxmi Race Course in Mumbai, is managed by the Royal Western Indian Turf Club. The latter is a corporate entity, and a momentous entity of the country's establishment. International jockeys make it a point to take a part in the Indian Derby, which gives the event an element of global horse racing importance. Horse racing is no preserve of the rich in Mumbai, for the sport also has eclectic following in the city, with punters from all strata of society.

Trust the advertising fraternity to latch on to every opportunity! The Indian Derby attracts significant sponsorship from top domestic companies and from Indian affiliates of international companies as well. All in all, the Indian Derby is rather more of a total exposition of modern India, and you should plan to witness it in February 2007, no matter where you reside!
