KHRC Approves 2012 Calendar

There has been some controversy and debate over the fact that the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission recently approved a 2012 racing calendar almost identical to the current year. While the full racing commission meeting on 18 October still needs to approve the calendar, there seems to be little doubt that it will be accepted. The five Thoroughbred tracks under the jurisdiction of the KHRC have requested 210 race days, while the three Standardbred tracks have asked for 65 days.

Union Rags Headed for Riches

It was an exciting day at Belmont Park this past Saturday (8 October 2011), with an unforgettable performance by Union Rags in the Champagne Stakes. The talented 2-year-old colt won the stakes race in spectacular fashion and is now headed for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, where he is likely to be the favorite. Union Rags' victory on Saturday has also set him on course for the Kentucky Derby in 2012.

Zenyatta Celebration – Honoring a Legend

Winner of the 2010 Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year, with 87% of the public's vote, Zenyatta was victorious in nineteen of the twenty races of her career, becoming the American record-holder for consecutive victories in unrestricted races. Referred to as the "Queen" by her trainer, Zenyatta was selected for NTRA's Moment of the Year Award three years in a row – in 2008 for her victory in the Ladies Classic; in 2009 for her Breeders Cup Classic win; and in 2010 for her very narrow defeat in the Breeders Cup Classic. Ceremonies held at Hollywood Park and Keeneland Race Track were attended by thousands of fans when she retired from racing and started her new career as a brood mare.

Ascot Hosts British Champions Day

Taking place at Ascot on 15 October 2011, the QIPCO British Champions Day is promoted as "Britain’s Richest Ever Raceday" and looks set to become a highlight on the British horseracing calendar of events. Launched on Saturday 30 April at Newmarket's Rowley Mile racecourse, the QIPCO is a new British horseracing series comprising of five championship categories – Sprint, Mile, Middle Distance, Long Distance, and Fillies & Mares. Featuring seven of the top races within the individual categories, the 28-day series aims to bring together some of the world's finest racehorses, their jockeys and trainers at leading British racecourses –Ascot, Epsom Downs, Doncaster, Goodwood, Newbury, Haydock Park and Newmarket.

Breeders Cup Hopefuls in Super Saturday at Belmont

With the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic due to take place at Churchill Downs on November 5, punters will no doubt be paying close attention to the performance of their favorites in upcoming races, including the six graded stakes on Belmont Park's Super Saturday card this weekend – the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational; the Jockey Club Gold Cup Invitational; the Flower Bowl Invitational; the Beldame; the Vosburgh; and the Kelso Breeders' Cup Handicap. All six races feature prime contenders for the prestigious Breeders Cup, and Saturday's races can be a make-or-break scenario for eligibility.

Keeneland Yearling Sale Ends Positively

Running from 11 to 24 September 2011, the Keeneland September Yearling Sale ended on Saturday with great gains and increases in all categories. Known as the world's largest Thoroughbred yearling auction, this year's event left consignors hopeful that the market was on the mend.
