Racetracks in Canada
Associations, such as the Ontario Horse Racing Industry Association and the Alberta Quarter Horse Racing Association, which was established in 1968, oversee and perform numerous tasks in regard to the various forms of horse racing in Canada. Promoting the sport of horse racing is only one aspect of their duties, with the enforcement of rules, licensing and working with owners and breeders, also falling under their mission statement.
In 1973 the first ceremony was held in Canada to pay tribute to and award those who made positive contributions to the racing industry, and today the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame still honors those with outstanding achievements. One of the Hall of Fame names from Canada made headlines worldwide: A horse by the name of Northern Dancer took the racing community by storm in 1964, by winning the Queen’s Plate, Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes all in one year. Visitors to Canada will be able to enjoy live horse racing action at race tracks located in various cities including Hanover Raceway, Hastings Park, Charlottetown and Hippodrome Quebec.
