Ellis Park Racetrack in Kentucky's Henderson was originally established in 1922 by the Green River Jockey Club. This lovely racecourse hosts many outstanding events through the season which runs from July through to Labor Day. Racegoers from Kentucky and surrounding States gather at Henderson's Ellis Park during the race season for an exciting day at the races.
First named Dade Park on its opening in 1922, the racetrack was sold to James C. Ellis in 1925 due to financial difficulties. The track was then renamed Ellis Park. From that time on the racecourse underwent many changes and improvements as well as a series of changes in ownership. It next came under the care on Roger and Lila Kumar in 1985, who then sold it in 1989 to the Racing Corporation of America. Ellis Park was later purchased by Churchill Downs Incorporated in the year 1998. In November 2005 the racetrack was struck by a tornado causing extensive damage. Many thought that was the end of Ellis Park, however the track was bought by Ron Geary in July 2006.
Henderson's Ellis Park covers 210 acres with a dirt track of 1 1/8 miles. Chutes were designed on the course for races of 1 mile and 7 furlongs. In 1993 the owners also added a mile long turf course. The grandstand can accommodate 6,000 racegoers and there are 38 barns. Ellis Park is well-known for the Grade III Gardenia Stakes along with 14 stake races. In 2007 Ellis Park hosted the Claiming Crown Limited for the first time.
