Suffolk Downs Horse Racing Track in Massachusetts

The brilliant racetrack known as Suffolk Downs was established in 1935 in East Boston, Massachusetts. It’s opening came at a most opportune time. Pari-mutuel wagering had just been legalized in the state and horse racing was a popular social event. Though it started out with just the basics, the concrete grandstand and horse-drawn starting gates and careful landscaping where then considered to be quite modern. Suffolk Downs quickly gained a reputation for being a fast and attractive track. Looking back, one can see that Suffolk Downs has come a long way since these somewhat humble beginnings.

Today the main track is one mile in length with a 1 030 ft homestretch. There are two chutes – one for 6 furlong races and the other for 1 ¼ mile races. Its surface is made up of stone dust and mason sand and it is sometimes mixed with silt and clay. There is a 4.5 Degree banking on the turns and a 2.0 Degree banking on the straights. The track features a Fontana safety rail and 12 starting gates. All this makes for extremely fast racing. The inner, turf track is seven furlongs long with a fixed rail and hedge. It is surfaced with perennial rye grass and is not banked. Together the tracks provide for most racing needs and the races are generally always exciting. The general parking is free and rates may vary so it is good to phone ahead and find out what they are.

Over the years, Suffolk Downs has seen its fair share of racing legends. The likes of Seabiscuit, Whirlaway and Cigar have all graced the track and left their hoof prints indelibly marked on the tracks history. It is likely safe to assume that as long as the track continues to provide such excellent racing facilities, that it will see many more racing legends make their way through the Suffolk Downs. Whatever the case, you can be sure that you can enjoy some brilliant racing at this great racecourse.
