WYPR Down The Home Stretch - May 16, 2011
With another Preakness upon us, thoroughbred horseracing takes center stage at Pimlico and across the state. But after the race is over, Maryland's horseracing industry faces long odds and questions about its future. Horse owners find it increasingly hard to make a living in Maryland, with more racing dates and greater purses being offered in neighboring states. Breeders are turning more and more to diversification to make ends meet. And bettors make their wages in parlors for simulcasts from other venues. Could racing disappear in the future? WYPR takes a look at the state of horseracing with a five-part radio series, "Down The Stretch: The Future of Maryland's Horseracing Future," starting Monday during "Morning Edition" on 88-1, WYPR -- your NPR news station. In part one of the radio series, WYPR's Paul Shepard talks to people about what can be done to improve the horse racing experience in Maryland.
