Heartbeat of Ontario Horse Racing: Anthony MacDonald [01:00]
In light of the recent announcement from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, that it plans to end the province-wide Slots at Racetracks program in March 2013, a series of videos were created to illustrate the wide range of people who will be dramatically affected by this decision. Horseman Anthony MacDonald of Guelph, Ont. is like many of the more than 60000 people involved directly or indirectly with horse racing in Ontario, individuals that make up the heartbeat of Ontario's vital and valuable industry. Finance Minister Dwight Duncan has been falsely referring to the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Slots at Racetrack revenue sharing program as a subsidy. His claim is that the Government has been providing a $345 million annual subsidy to Ontario's Horse Racing Industry. In a recent fundraising email to supporters, the Ontario Liberal Party suggested that they are "choosing to support our youngest learners over wealthy race track owners". According to OLG's financial statements, the Government of Ontario is receiving $1.1 billion per year from the Slots at Racetracks Program. The horse racing industry, which has made space available to OLG slots and allowed competition between the slots and horse racing at their facilities, receives only 20% of the revenue from the slots. The Government walks away with 75% of the slots revenue and host municipalities receive 5%. Both NDP Leader Andrea Horwath (ow.ly and PC Leader Tim Hudak (ow.ly have blasted the Liberals and this ...

Marilyn's Guy - 2012 Excelsior (G3) [04:18]
Marilyn's Guy earned his second career stakes victory Saturday afternoon at Aqueduct Racetrack, holding off a resurgent San Pablo to take the 100th running of the Grade 3, $150000 Excelsior by a neck. The 6-year-old son of Yonaguska, who came off an 11-month layoff to win the As Indicated overnight stakes at the Big A on February 18, broke alertly and quickly moved up to within a half-length of San Pablo as he led the field of six through an opening quarter-mile in 24.00 seconds and a half in 48.81. Surging to the front with a little more than three-eighths of a mile to go, the big gray gelding opened up by 2 ½ lengths at the top of the stretch, and despite wearying through the final yards, was able to muster just enough to hit the wire in front. Marilyn's Guy covered the 1 1/8 miles of the Excelsior -- the final graded stakes of the Big A's inner track meet -- in 1:52.54.
