1990 Pimlico Special : ABC Broadcast [17:41]
Criminal Type scored a far-reaching victory in the Pimlico Special Saturday. The 5-year-old son of Alydar ran the fastest 1 3/16 miles in Pimlico history, sent his trainer, Wayne Lukas, over the $100-million mark in career purses and exposed a story about how fine the line is between being a hero and a heel as a jockey's agent. Under Jose Santos, who was riding him for the first time, Criminal Type shadowed Ruhlmann all the way around, edged past him with about 50 yards left and won by a neck in the first $1-million race ever run in Maryland. Ruhlmann, the second betting choice at 2-1, finished 1 1/4 lengths ahead of De Roche, a 34-1 shot who finished 1 1/2 lengths in front of Mi Selecto. Opening Verse, made the 3-2 favorite by a crowd of 15850 on a cool, overcast day, flattened out in the stretch and wound up fifth, beaten by about 3 1/4 lengths. Wind Splitter finished sixth, and after him in the 10-horse field came Silver Survivor, Gorgeous, With Approval and Music Merci. Criminal Type's time was 1:53, breaking by a fifth of a second the record that Blushing John set in winning the Special last year. The Special is the same distance as the Preakness, which will be run here next Saturday, and the fastest Preakness times have been Secretariat's unofficial 1:53 2/5 clocking in 1973 and Tank's Prospect's matching time in 1985. Criminal Type was the fourth betting choice and paid $17.40, $6.80 and $5.20. Ruhlmann paid $4.80 and $4.60, and De Roche's show price was $10.20. A ...

1994 Mother Goose Stakes - Lakeway [06:10]
Belmont Week came to a record-setting close yesterday when the California filly Lakeway won the Mother Goose Stakes by more than four lengths over Cinnamon Sugar and by 10 lengths over Inside Information, and pranced to the head of the class of 3-year-old fillies. It was one day after the California colt Tabasco Cat won the Belmont Stakes and moved to the head of the class of 3-year-old colts, and Lakeway gave an even more powerful performance. She not only won for the fifth time in six starts but buried the hometown favorite, Inside Information, who had won six of her seven races. And she did it by knocking one and one-fifth seconds off the record for the race in its 38th running. The two favorites ran together stride for stride for more than half a mile, but then Kent Desormeaux nudged his filly, and Lakeway took charge. She collared Inside Information with three-eighths of a mile to go, edged past her turning for home and widened the lead relentlessly down the stretch. As she flashed home, she had 4 1/4 lengths on Cinnamon Sugar, a 27-1 long shot, who in turn had six lengths on Inside Information. They cruised in fast fractions of 1:083/5 for three-quarters of a mile and 1:332/5 for the mile. And Lakeway completed the mile and an eighth in 1:462/5 , shattering the record for the race set in 1978 by Caesar's Wish, but still a full second off the track record for the distance set in 1973 by the incomparable Secretariat. It was also the fifth record set in three days of ...

1979 Travers Stakes: CBS Broadcast [09:15]
Next to the Daily Racing Form listing of five of the seven starters in last Saturday's Travers Stakes at Saratoga was an asterisk indicating that those horses could handle a muddy track. The other two had no mud mark. When rain drenched the track, making the going difficult and tiring, bettors gave those marks and those non-marks considerable thought. They could have saved themselves the effort. One of the two without a mark was General Assembly, an enigmatic critter who went out and won the 110th Travers by 15 splashy lengths. The General has led a puzzling racing life, up one day and down the next. Racing fans adore him after one race and deride him after the next. Until last week's Travers he was known primarily as "Secretariat's best son," but that has meant very little because Secretariat has been anything but the sire he was expected to be when he was sent to stud after his stunning two years as a runner. Well, what General Assembly did in the Travers was stunning and more. He ran over a track rated "sloppy" in 2:00 for the 1 miles to set not only a stakes record but a track record as well, and Saratoga is the oldest track in the US, having opened its iron gates 116 years ago. The field the General left in his wake was the best group of 3-year-olds assembled since the Kentucky Derby. Not since Secretariat himself won the 1973 Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths has there been so overwhelming a triumph in a race of such high significance. But a question remains, one as ...
