1998 Woodward Stakes [02:37]
Skip Away raced into thoroughbred history yesterday when he won the 45th Woodward Stakes at Belmont Park against an all-star field. With the victory, his ninth straight, he drew ever closer to the stature and the money record of the great Cigar. Skip Away, the durable gray 5-year-old purchased three years ago for $22000 by the trainer Sonny Hine for his wife, Carolyn, won by a length and three-quarters over Gentlemen, the 6-year-old iron horse from Argentina, with Running Stag third, Free House fourth and Coronado's Quest fifth and last. Coronado's Quest, the only 3-year-old in the field, saw his five-race winning streak end. Jerry Bailey, who won his fourth Woodward Stakes and his third in the last four years, including two aboard Cigar, was asked to rank Skip Away and Cigar. ''It's like having two kids,'' he said. ''Which one do you love most?'' Sonny Hine, clamoring for respect for his horse for months, said: ''He is some horse, the best there is. He is one of the best I've ever seen. He is so brilliant.'' Carolyn Hine said, ''We want him to get the respect he deserves.'' Richard Mandella, the California trainer whose Dare and Go ended Cigar's winning streak at 16 two years ago, led the cheers for his Gentlemen but acknowledged Skip Away's achievement. ''At the top of the stretch, I thought we had a big chance to win this one,'' Mandella said. ''But Skip Away just got away from us. He showed everyone just how much of a tremendous horse he is.'' Shug McGaughey, the ...
Bluff WIN 12.26.12 FairGrounds [05:18]
The Bluff Man WON the 8th race at Fair Grounds on December 26th! What a nice Christmas present. Al pretty much called it. He entered Bluff MTO thinking that the race would come off the turf and it did. He thought the distance would not be a factor against this group many horses trying the turf as a last resort and it wasn't. He said the 2 week layoff would probably be just right as it would take the edge of and it did! The outside post actually did us a favor because Jumpin Jack Flash had to settle in behind the leaders and relax in third, then second going down the back stretch. Bluff was on the bit the whole way down the backside tugging the jock all the way to the head of the lane. When the time was right he launched his offensive and never looked back. Congratulations to all on our 2nd Victory at the 2nd best track in the US of A!
Oscar Pistorius vs Horse [01:31]
'Blade Runner' Oscar Pistorius outruns horse in race! SOUTH African Oscar Pistorius beat Arab horse Maserati in the 'run like the wind' race. The 26-year-old Pistorius, known as the Blade Runner because of the carbon fibre blades he runs on after having his legs amputated below the knee before he was aged one because of a congenital condition, beat the horse over 200 metres. Pistorius, who reached the 400m semi-finals in London and also ran in the 4x400m relay final to realise his boyhood dream of competing at the able-bodied Games, took full advantage of starting 15 metres in front of Maserati, who ruined its chances of winning by making a terrible start. The race was not the first time athletes have competed against horses with some of the most notable champions such as 1936 Olympics hero Jesse Owens and 1992 Olympic 100m gold medallist Linford Christie also going up against their four-legged friends, who generally out-paced their human rivals.
