1978 Travers Stakes - Affirmed -vs- Alydar [05:41]
With the infield open to the public, a record crowd of 50122 jammed its way into the Spa, shattering the previous record by more than 15000. There was no way anyone in attendance or the millions watching on TV could foresee the bizarre events that would ensue. What began as a glorious celebration of the sport would end in bitterness and controversy. For the first three-quarters of a mile, everything was going as predicted. Affirmed, favored at 3-5, was sitting comfortably in second and about to dispose of the pace-setting Shake Shake Shake, who had been setting leisurely fractions of :24 and :48. Alydar, sent off at even-money, was in third, two lengths behind Affirmed. Everyone was waiting anxiously for something to happen. When would Affirmed blow past Shake Shake Shake? How and when was Velasquez going to attack Affirmed, and how was he going to try to avoid looking into the eye of the tiger this time? The answer soon became obvious. Cordero took Shake Shake Shake off the rail and began drifting out into Affirmed, opening a huge hole for Alydar, who had been running just inside of Nasty of Bold. Velasquez, as if expecting that hole to open, wasted no time and shot Alydar right through along the vacated rail. Affirmed by now had taken over the lead from the tiring Shake Shake Shake, only to have Alydar come charging through on his inside going into the far turn. The crowd let out a resounding cheer and braced for the battle they had been waiting for. Pincay, sensing the ...

1989 Belmont Stakes: Full ABC Broadcast [01:05:24]
Easy Goer finally lived up to his spectacular promise of early spring yesterday when he roared past Sunday Silence on the turn for home and won the 121st Belmont Stakes by eight lengths. In doing so, he prevented Sunday Silence from becoming racing's 12th Triple Crown winner. Earlier this year, Easy Goer looked like the next Secretariat, a colt of limitless potential who might set new standards of excellence. Then, after second-place finishes in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, Easy Goer seemed likelier to emulate his father, Alydar, who in 1978 became the only horse to finish second in all three Triple Crown races, losing each leg of the Triple Crown to Affirmed. But yesterday, there was talk of Secretariat again. Easy Goer's winning Belmont time of 2:26.01 under Pat Day over a fast but not unusually quick track was the second-fastest Belmont ever, behind only Secretariat's 1973 world-record clocking of 2:24. Easy Goer's performance ranks as one of the most impressive in the history of the sport. $1 Million Bonus Sunday Silence actually earned more in defeat than the winner's purse of $413520, getting a $1 million Triple Crown bonus for the best overall record in the three races. But he would have earned $2.5 million more, and a certain place in the sport's Hall of Fame, with a victory. Instead, he might be considered only the second-best 3-year-old of this year unless he can beat Easy Goer again. Easy Goer, a chestnut-colored son of Alydar and Relaxing, bred and ...
