Beetlejuice bets on the horses [00:39]
Horse racing is an equestrian sport that has a long history. Archaeological records indicate that horse racing occurred in ancient Babylon, Syria, and Egypt. Both chariot and mounted horse racing were events in the ancient Greek Olympics by 648 BC. In the Roman Empire, chariot and mounted horse racing were major industries. Thoroughbred racing was, and is, popular with the aristocrats and royalty of British society, earning it the title "Sport of Kings." The style of racing, the distances and the type of events vary significantly by the country in which the race is occurring, and many countries offer different types of horse races. There are three major types of racing: flat racing, steeplechasing (racing over jumps), and harness racing, where horses trot or pace while pulling a driver in a sulky. A major part of horse racing's economic importance lies in the gambling associated with it, an activity that in 2008 generated a world-wide market worth around US$115 billion. Various types of racing have given rise to horse breeds that excel in the specific disciplines of each sport. Breeds that may be used for flat racing include the Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse, Arabian, Paint, and Appaloosa. Steeplechasing breeds include the Thoroughbred and AQPS. Harness racing is dominated by Standardbred horses in Australia, New Zealand and North America, but several other breeds, such as the Russian Trotter and Finnhorse, are seen in Europe.

Western Aristocrat - 2011 Jamaica (G1) [02:16]
Western Aristocrat controlled the pace and turned back a challenge from favored Brilliant Speed to collect his first Grade 1 victory in Saturday's $250000 Jamaica Handicap at Belmont Park. In the hands red-hot rider Corey Nakatani, who collected his fifth of six victories on the day in the Jamaica, Western Aristocrat was sent straight to the lead where he strolled through opening fractions of 26.27 and 52.20. With Brilliant Speed drawing alongside Western Aristocrat turning for home, the winner was let out and went on to a one-length victory, stopping the clock at 1:50.34 for 1 1/8 miles over Belmont's "firm" inner turf course.

1999 Hopeful Stakes Grade I [04:04]
The monster of the freshman class, More Than Ready, was back in the barn resting for the battles of autumn at Belmont Park and the championships beyond. But in his place came the challengers led by High Yield, the West Coast star trained by D. Wayne Lukas, who gave More Than Ready something to think about when he won the Hopeful Stakes today at Saratoga by five lengths. High Yield is a 2-year-old chestnut son of Storm Cat, and he arrived with impeccable credentials. He ran second in his debut at Hollywood Park in July, third in a stakes race the next time and was a runaway first this afternoon. He is owned by a clutch of racing's aristocrats: Bob and Beverly Lewis, Michael Tabor and Mrs. John Magnier. He is handled by Lukas, who has won four runnings of the Hopeful in this decade and 25 stakes for 2-year-old horses over all. And he was ridden by Jerry Bailey, the prince of jockeys. So his success today in Saratoga's climactic race for juvenile colts was no surprise. High Yield was the 8-5 favorite to outrun Afternoon Affair, the second choice, who showed no response in the homestretch and finished fifth. And at the wire, High Yield had five lengths on the long shot Settlement, who had three lengths on Exciting Story. Afterward, Lukas wasted no time setting the stage for the eventual confrontation between High Yield and the undefeated More Than Ready, who is trained by Todd Pletcher, his onetime assistant. ''I wish More Than Ready had been in there today,'' Lukas said in ...
