1999 Goodwood BC Handicap - Budroyale [02:28]
A Boston Red Sox fan since he was 8 years old, Ted West hit the daily double Saturday. His baseball team got back into the American League playoffs and his durable gelding, Budroyale, earned a ticket for the Breeders' Cup by knocking off General Challenge in the $498000 Goodwood Breeders' Cup Handicap at Santa Anita. Ted H. West, Ted West's son, trains Budroyale now, having taken over the stable in April when his father got into trouble with California racing authorities, but the Wests will go to Florida as a team when they try to duplicate Saturday's upset in the $4-million Breeders' Cup Classic at Gulfstream Park on Nov. 6. Ted West, 62, turned over 24 horses and Budroyale to his son when he was fined $12000 and suspended for 90 days after eight of his horses that ran in 1998 tested positive for the controversial drug clenbuterol. Horses can train but not race on the drug in California. One of West's positives came after a win by Budroyale at Hollywood Park. "We don't give it to Budroyale anymore, we'd be crazy to after what they did to me," the elder West said. "But I still believe in the medication--I think it's good for horses--and Kentucky, which is about 100 years ahead of California, just recently came out with clenbuterol rules that make more sense." It was the trainer's father who spent $50000 to claim Budroyale from trainer Nick Canani as the California-bred was winning a race at Santa Anita in February 1998. That was the last in a succession of claims for ...

2010 Wood Memorial (G1) - Eskendereya [02:00]
Taking command at the top of the stretch, heavily favored Eskedereya blew away five rivals to take the 86th running of the Grade 1, $750000 Wood Memorial on Saturday afternoon at Aqueduct Racetrack by an authoritative 9¾ lengths over Jackson Bend. The margin of victory was even greater than his 8½-length win over Jackson Bend in his previous start in the Fountain of Youth on February 20 and reaffirmed Eskendereyas status as a leading contender for the May 1 Kentucky Derby. In the 85 previous runnings of the Wood, 24 winners have gone on to claim the favorites role in the Run for the Roses; 11 have won. Ridden by John Velazquez, the 3-year-old chestnut son of Giants Causeway settled in third behind fractions of 24.32, 49.21 and 1:13.54 set by longshot Most Happy Fella, then ranged up three wide on the far turn to take over straightening for home. With Velazquez glancing back over his shoulder, Eskendereya continued to widen the margin between himself and the rest of the field, hitting the wire in 1:49.97 for the 1 1/8th miles. There was more there than what we saw, even as impressive as it was, said Todd Pletcher, who trains Eskendereya for Zayat Stables. The thing that Johnny did today was take pretty good care of him from the eighth pole to the wire.
