1998 Breeders' Cup Mile + Post Race [13:40]
Regardless of the odds it is not wise to dismiss any horse trained by Michael Dickinson. The lesson was manifested dramatically this afternoon as Da Hoss, at 11-1 odds and in only his second start after a 22-month layoff, won the $1 million Breeders' Cup Mile for the second time in three years. With a half-furlong remaining the 6-year-old gelding appeared beaten as another long shot, Hawksley Hill, pushed his nose in front on the outside. But under the jockey John Velazquez, who had never had a Breeders' Cup mount before this year, Da Hoss rallied and prevailed by a head at the wire. The final time for the race on a turf course rated firm was 1:351/5 , three-fifths of a second faster than the clocking when Da Hoss won the Breeders' Cup Mile at Woodbine in Toronto in 1996 under Gary Stevens. This time, he returned $25.20 for a $2 win ticket. Miesque, a champion in both Europe and North America, won consecutive runnings of the Mile in 1987-88, as did Lure in 1992-93. But in many respects Da Hoss's twin triumphs are more extraordinary, because the only start he made between them was a three-quarter-length victory in allowance company at Colonial Downs in Virginia on Oct. 11. Da Hoss has been plagued with physical problems since he was a foal. ''A fetlock when he was a foal,'' Dickinson said, ''a pair of bone spurs as a yearling, another fetlock in June of last year, some lameness last fall. There have been some vet bills. His groom spends six hours a day with him, massaging ...

1979 Preakness Stakes [09:53]
Last Saturday afternoon at Pimlico following Spectacular Bid's 5-length victory in the Preakness, one could almost hear the flapping of wings as the last of the colt's detractors took off for parts unknown. Bid ran his best race yet. By picking up first money of $165300, he pushed his bankroll over $1 million to become the youngest millionaire in racing history, and he ran the mile and [3/16]ths in 1:54[1/5], the second-fastest time in a race that is 104 years old. Appearing to toy with four opponents, Spectacular Bid rolled easily to the finish line to a tremendous ovation from his owners' neighbors in Baltimore, where this handsome gray colt has now become as much of a hero as Brooks Robinson, John Unitas and the blue crab. With the first two legs tucked away, Spectacular Bid must now be considered odds-on to become the third Triple Crown winner in the past three years. On June 9, he will try to complete the sweep in the Belmont Stakes. The main question about that race is how many opponents the New York Racing Association can muster to run against him. There won't be a bunch. An hour after the Preakness, LeRoy Jolley, the trainer of fifth-place finisher General Assembly, reflected on what he had witnessed. "There were times when I had doubts about Spectacular Bid," he said. "No more. My horse couldn't have beaten him if he had cut through the infield. I've had enough of running against Spectacular Bid for a while. So has the General. Spectacular Bid's Preakness was ...

1985 Breeders' Cup Day [09:22]
Proud Truth, once the favorite for last spring's Kentucky Derby but fifth in that race and sidelined all summer with an injury, stormed from last place to beat Gate Dancer by a head and win the $3 million Breeders' Cup Classic yesterday in an upset at Aqueduct Race Track. The victory by the almost-forgotten son of Graustark, coupled with earlier results among the seven Breeders' Cup races, scrambled several championship pictures: . * Chief's Crown, who was favored to win the Classic and with it the champion 3-year-old and horse-of-the-year titles as well, finished a tired fourth, beaten 9 3/4 lengths. * The horse-of-the-year candidate Lady's Secret was walloped by her stablemate Life's Magic in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Distaff.
