Discreetly Mine-2010 King's Bishop Stakes [01:46]
SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY - Saturday's $250000 King's Bishop Stakes may not have gone exactly as Todd Pletcher would have envisioned it earlier in the day. But the end result was just what the meet's leading trainer was looking for after Discreetly Mine led throughout to post a 1 1/4-length decision over a game Bank Merger in the Grade 1 dash for 3-year-olds. Discreetly Mine had used stalking tactics to win his last two starts, and that was the same type of trip Pletcher was expecting again in the seven-furlong King's Bishop. But after it became readily apparent the main track was speed-biased through the afternoon, Pletcher and jockey John Velazquez opted to alter Discreetly Mine's usual running style and put the versatile colt right on the lead if possible. That strategy ultimately paid big dividends. Breaking alertly, Discreetly Mine was able to outrun the speedy Bulldogger to the lead from the inside, setting a lively pace of 21.90 and 44.11 seconds in the process. Discreetly Mine shook off his early pursuer entering the stretch but then had to fend off serious challenges from Bank Merger and Latigo Shore before ultimately edging clear at the end. Bank Merger, who entered the race undefeated in two previous starts, rallied four wide off the final turn and continued resolutely to finish second. Latigo Shore was another two lengths further back in third after coming widest into the stretch. D' Funnybone, the last horse to defeat Discreetly Mine, in the Grade 2 Woody Stephens ...

Discreetly Mine - 2010 King's Bishop (G1) [01:56]
In an electrifying display of speed, Discreetly Mine roared through an opening quarter-mile in 21.90 seconds and a half in 44.11 on his way to a 1 ¼-length victory in the 26th running of the Grade 1, $250000 King's Bishop on Saturday afternoon at Saratoga Race Course. With trainer Todd Pletcher instructing jockey John Velazquez Jr. to take the E. Paul Robsham Stables-owned son of Mineshaft to the front, the colt maintained a comfortable margin throughout and hit the wire in 1:23.16 for the first Grade 1 win of his career. Late-running Bank Merger finished second and Latigo Shore closed for third in the field of seven. Discreetly Mine paid $4.10 for a $2 wager as the even-money favorite in the field of seven, and with the victory now has a shot at year-end honors in the sprint division. "Any time you go 21, 44 and change for seven eighths, that's pretty demanding," Pletcher said after the race. "We were happy to hold on. We basically felt like we had to (go for the lead) the way the track was playing."

little Wake at Noon, under Jorge Chavez, burned up the front end, setting fractions of :21.90 and :44.30 while Plecther-trained Left Bank pressed the pace in second. At the top of the stretch, the six-horse field was stretched out across the track, all in contention. But More Than Ready found his "A" game to sweep past the field. Valiant Halory, the longest shot in the field at 27.50-to-1, rallied late for second, 3 ¾ lengths in front of Millencolin. Running time was 1:22.49 over a fast track ...
