2008 NHKマイルカップ(G1) ディープスカイ 次世代の最強馬へ [01:46]
4月には3歳クラシック初戦の皐月賞を控えたが、昆は同競走の回避を選択し、条件戦出走時から目標に据えていた5月のNHKマイルカップへ向かった。当日は1番人気に支持されると、道中では後方2、3番手の位置から、最後の直線で馬場の内側を抜け出して優勝。GI級（JpnI）競走初勝利を飾った。この勝利は厩舎、馬主、生産者にとっても初めてのGI級競走勝利となった。レース後、四位は「是非、この馬でダービーに出たい」と昨年のウオッカに続く東京優駿連覇に意欲を示した。関係者間の協議の結果、中2週での東京優駿に出走が決定した。 初勝利まで6戦という成績は、東京優駿優勝馬としては1950年のクモノハナ（8戦）に次ぐ遅い記録である。昆によれば、入厩時のディープスカイは「新馬とか特別戦を勝っている馬に比べると、完成度でかなり劣る馬」だった。しかし初勝利を挙げた頃から状態が向上し、春にはNHKマイルカップ、東京優駿を連覇するに至った。毎日杯から騎乗した四位は、「かれこれ26-27年馬に乗ってきたけど、2ヶ月の間でこんなに強くなった馬に、人生で初めて出会いました」と述べている。 レースでは騎手の意に反して前に行きたがる面も見せたが、四位は「本質的には折り合いに不安のあるタイプではない」と述べている。日常生活では穏やかな馬であり、ダービーの後に四位が厩舎を訪れた際には、馬房の中で寝転がったままで四位の手からニンジンを口にしたという。悍の強いサラブレッドとしては珍しい行動であり、四位は「牧場の人が大切にしてくれたんでしょう。だから人間のことを信頼しているんですよ。こんな馬は初めて」と語っている。

So, this is something I made real quick. Not my best work, but I was watching lots of old videos about the Triple Crown and came to love old horse racing. (I don't really think it's any different now, I just love the black and white and the people standing on the rail and all the old stars that went to go see the races like Bing Crosby, Lucille Ball and such.) I do not own these clips. All rights to respected owners.
