Gone West, who floundered while trying to provide Woody Stephens with his sixth straight Belmont Stakes winner last month, won back his national prominence yesterday with a 12 1/2-length triumph over Pledge Card and Polish Navy in the $230400 Dwyer Stakes at Belmont Park. Gone West benefited from a drying track that favored front-runners and rail-runners, but was still very impressive and clearly the best horse in the field. Polish Navy outbroke him, but Gone West shot up on the inside to take the lead within the first quarter-mile and the duel was over. Gone West led at every call while posting steady fractions of 23 2/5, 47, 1:10 3/5 and 1:35 3/5. Gone West finished the one and one-eighth miles in the fine time of 1:48 2/ 5 under Eddie Maple and paid $4.20 as the favorite in a field of six. Pledge Card ran down Polish Navy in the final furlong and beat him by a half a length for second. Another eight lengths back was KC's Best Turn, and Jazzing Around and Simply Majestic brought up the rear. The victory was a bright spot in a gray Belmont meeting for Stephens. His Belmont Stakes streak was broken June 6 when Gone West finished sixth, 23 3/4 lengths behind Bet Twice, and the trainer had not won a race since sending out Nudge to an allowance victory that day. The Dwyer was only the third victory of the Belmont meeting for Stephens, the first coming when Gone West won the opening-day Withers Stakes on May 6.
