Una vez que pitó Patricio Loustau, los primeros instantes mostraron a la visita con mayor tenencia de pelota y, de hecho, los de De Felipe también contaron con la primera jugada clara. Luego de una gran atajada de Saja tras un cabezazo, la pelota le quedó dentro del área a Cauteruccio, que inexplicablemente desde abajo del arco atinó a patearla al travesaño. Racing, por su parte, apostaba a la velocidad de sus jóvenes promesas en ataque, Luciano Vietto, Ricardo Centurión y Lucas Fariña. Y a los 39 el artesano del primero marcó el 2-0. Quien armó la jugada que se ensució apenas en el borde del área de Quilmes fue Vietto, pero Fariña se la llevó y definió con un toque sutil cuando Trípodi salía presuroso a achicar.
